Sometimes the best way to experience Vegas is to leave it, at least for a few hours. Living in Summerlin, I’ve found that some of the most memorable adventures sit just a short drive from the Strip. Here are five day trips that’ll give you stories worth telling.
Oatman, Arizona: Wild West Meets Wild Burros
Two hours east on Route 66, you’ll stumble into a town where wild burros own the streets. These friendly descendants of miners’ donkeys roam freely while actors stage gunfight shows daily at noon and 2:15pm. The mining history here is real. The characters are unforgettable. And yes, you can feed the burros.
Valley of Fire State Park: Nature’s Light Show
Just an hour northeast, ancient red rock formations explode with color during golden hour. The Fire Wave trail is essential. Trust me on this. Bring $15 for entrance (non-Nevada residents) and plan your visit for late afternoon when the rocks look like they’re ablaze.
Pioneer Saloon, Goodsprings: History You Can Drink In
This 1913 watering hole sits 45 minutes south and delivers Nevada’s most storied bar experience. Those bullet holes in the wall? Real, from a deadly 1915 card game. Clark Gable waited here during the search for Carole Lombard after her plane crashed nearby. Fallout: New Vegas fans will recognize it immediately.
Nelson Ghost Town: Hollywood’s Desert Secret
Crashed planes, vintage cars, and a Civil War-era mine where deserters fought over gold claims. Nelson delivers pure Americana 45 minutes southeast. Mine tours run $15-20. Photographers flock here for good reason.
Seven Magic Mountains: Art in the Desert
Twenty minutes south, Ugo Rondinone’s towering neon boulders rise from the Mojave like something out of a dream. Free, open 24/7, and relocating by 2027, so see them now. Best photos come at sunrise before crowds arrive.
- Best for photographers: Valley of Fire and Nelson
- Best for history buffs: Pioneer Saloon and Oatman
- Best quick escape: Seven Magic Mountains
