Living in Vegas puts some of America’s most striking landscapes within easy reach. After years exploring this desert region, I’ve found the real discoveries often sit just beyond the Strip. Here are five day trips worth the drive.
Oatman, Arizona – Wild West Charm
Two hours east, this former mining town feels like stepping into another century. Wild burros roam the streets – descendants of pack animals miners left behind during the gold rush. Gunfight shows run daily at noon and 2:15pm. They’re theatrical, yes, but that’s part of the fun.
Valley of Fire State Park – Red Rock and Golden Light
An hour northeast sits Nevada’s oldest state park. The sandstone formations here shift from orange to deep red as the sun moves. The Fire Wave trail rewards early evening visitors – arrive during golden hour and you’ll see why photographers keep coming back. Entry runs $15 for non-Nevada residents.
Pioneer Saloon, Goodsprings – A Bar With Stories
Forty-five minutes south, this saloon has poured drinks since 1913. Look at the walls and you’ll spot bullet holes from a 1915 card game that turned violent. Gamers recognise it from Fallout: New Vegas. But the heavier history involves Clark Gable, who waited here for news after Carole Lombard’s plane went down in the nearby mountains.
Nelson Ghost Town – Rust and Memory
Southeast of Vegas, Nelson sits quiet and photogenic. Vintage cars decay in the desert sun. Crashed movie props lean against old buildings. The Techatticup Mine dates to the Civil War era. Tours cost $15-20 and take you underground into Nevada’s mining past.
Seven Magic Mountains – Colour Against Sand
Twenty minutes south, artist Ugo Rondinone stacked neon boulders against the brown desert floor. The contrast works. Free to visit, open around the clock – though the installation relocates in 2027, so don’t wait too long.
Each spot offers something the Strip doesn’t: quiet, history, and that particular desert emptiness. Follow Vegas Navigator for more local finds.
