Courtroom Security Under Spotlight After Judge Attack

by | Jan 3, 2024 | Local, News

A defendant attacked Judge Mary Kay Holthus inside the Regional Justice Center on January 3rd, 2024. He leaped over the bench during his sentencing hearing. Courtroom video captured the entire assault.

What Happened That Day

The defendant was in court facing sentencing on an attempted battery charge. Judge Holthus had just finished commenting on his lengthy criminal record. Seconds later, he vaulted over the bench.

The speed caught everyone off guard. Marshals and court staff rushed to restrain him. They pulled him off the judge within moments.

Judge Holthus suffered a head injury but was reported okay afterward. One court marshal was also hurt in the struggle.

The Aftermath

Prosecutors added new charges: battery and battery on a protected person. The Clark County District Attorney’s office thanked those who intervened and promised to pursue the maximum penalties.

Judges, attorneys, and court staff face these risks daily. Security protocols get reviewed after incidents like this one, and changes often follow.

About the Regional Justice Center

The facility sits at 200 Lewis Avenue in downtown Las Vegas. Thousands of cases move through its courtrooms each year. Armed marshals staff the building, and everyone passes through security checkpoints at the entrance.

Still, this attack shows how fast things can turn violent, even in a controlled setting.

If you have a court date coming up, arrive early. Follow security instructions. Keep your composure throughout the proceedings.
